"Qi De Yan's Works Colour the World"

Qi Deyan, born in 1932 in Jiangxi Province, Gaoan City, graduated from LuXun Fine Arts University in 1955. He is currently a Professor at Chongqing University, the supervisor of the Masters degree in the area of Mural Painting, Member of the Chinese Fine Arts Artists Association, Executive Member of the Chinese Watercolour Artists Association.

Long years of hard work toiling in the field of fine arts matured his painting skills day-by-day, becoming critically acclaimed and enjoying a high reputation overseas as well as in China. In 1998, he travelled to America and Canada to teach and hold personal exhibitions and was retained as a Visiting Professor in Manitoba, Canada. In 1994 and 1996, he travelled to Waseda University and Nagano City in Japan. Many of his works are collected both privately and publically in Japan, Canada, America, Germany, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan etc. In the meantime he published "The Works and Artistry of the Watercolour of Qi De Yan" in 1988 and"Current Architectural Drawing - the watercolour of Qi De Yan" in 1995.

In 1996, Charles, the Prince of Wales in England, saw Qi De Yan's watercolour and liked them very much. He wrote Qi Deyan a personal letter and sent him a book of his own watercolour works. In the letter, Prince Charles wrote "I can't tell you how touched I was to receive a copy of your book of watercolours... and I have been overwhelmed by the quality of your watercolours. They have given me great pleasure and I am enormously impressed by the sheer competence of your work not to mention the wonderful wetness you achieve with your use of the paint."

This autumn (1998), under the invitation of the Vancouver Chinese Cultural Centre, Professor Qi will travel to Vancouver, Canada where he will teach and hold personal exhibitions to introduce Chinese culture to overseas Chinese and foreigners.

"Towards Mutual Understanding Through Cultural Exchange"
The Toyo News (25 January 2000)

"Towards Mutual Understanding Through Cultural Exchange"

"I would like Japanese People to understand Chinese culture and natural scenary more deeply through our paintings", says Qi Deyan, who is a professor at Chongqing University and an Executive Member of the Chinese Watercolour Artists Association. 1998 is the 20th anniversary of Japan-China Amity Treaty. Yet, most of the communications between China and Japan remain as business communications and for most ordinary Japanese, China is still a "close yet far country".

Qi Deyan (67), his wife Chang Lianyu (66) and their son Qi Ping (40) will be holding the "Three-Person Contemporary Chinese Watercolour Painting Exhibition" from 25 January 2000 for 6 days at the Tsukuba Contemporary Art Gallery in Azuma, Tsukuba City. All three in the family play an active part on the world stage as watercolour artists.

Ms. Ayabe Hiroko, a professor and the Dean of International Relations Department in Tsukuba University is the sponsor for the artists' visit to Japan and the plan adviser for the exhibition. The Tsukuba City International Association and the International Cultural Communication Department of Tsukuba City Council are the sponsors exhibition.

Deyan and his wife were university classmates. They first came to Japan in 1994 and held their two-person exhibition in Ueda City in Nagano Prefecture under the invitation of Nagano-China Cultural Communication Association. Then in 1996 Qi Ping joined them and they held a three-person exhibition. This family three-person exhibition in Tsukuba City will be the second in Japan and there will be 50 works exhibited. The exhibition will introduce the vivid life of Chinese people and the magnificent natural scenary found in contemporary China.

Deyan's "Red Boat" (64 x 82 cm) was painted when he was travelling in Seattle (U.S.). The bright red boat docked in a port combined with the swaying water surface forms a beautiful picture in Deyan's painting. "I like both Chinese and Japanese scenery", says Deyan. "Yatsugaoka Highland" and other paintings depicting Japanese scenery will also be exhibited.

Lianyu is a Associate Professor in Chongqing University and a Committee Member of the Chinese Watercolour Artists Association. "The Purple Chrysanthemum", "The Poppies", "The White Lily" and "The Sunflowers" etc depicts the colour and shape of the flower with rich beauty. "The most important aspect of the painting of flowers is to depict their freshness and liveliness that represents the hopes and dreams of the future."

Ping is the Committee Member of Interior Design Branch Association of the Chinese Architects Association and an avant-garde painter. From 1995 to 1998 he completed a Masters of Environmental Design at Tsukuba University (Japan). He likes old street scenes and most of the subjects of his paintings are buildings. "Deep Mountain, Old Temple" depicting an old temple hidden in deep foliage in a remote town in Guizhou Province China and "The Voice of the Mountain", "The Thai Village" etc will be exhibited.

Deyan was very happy to be able to meet his friend Mr. Ikehara Giichiro again, who is a Honorary Professor in Waseda University (Japan) and a famous Japanese architect . "Mr Ikehara will guide us to some art galleries that he recently designed and I am really looking forward to that", Deyan smiles. "I made many Japanese friends when I was studying in Tsukuba for three years. I am really happy I will be able to meet them again" says Ping.

Deyan has published several articles concerning Japanese watercolour paintings and Japanese architecture in Chinese academic journals such as "Fine Art" and "Architecture Journal". Ping will publish "Contemporary Environmental Design - Japan", from Chongqing University Publishing House this month. Both father and son are introducing Japan to China.

"Because of this exhibition, we had much opportunity to communicate with many Japanese people - they are all very kind and this makes me happy" says Lianyu.

"China and Japan have had much cultural communication during their long history. There are many common points in Oriental culture and the arts. Through this Three-Person exhibition we hope that we can deepen the mutual understanding and the Japan-China friendship" hopes Deyan.
